The Funeral

Most of us are aware that funerals are a natural event in different forms and cultural influences for all Americans, regardless of age, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status.  It is important to recognize the impact of funerals on most individuals and significance specific to managing grief and loss. This discussion will examine the role of the funeral as a community support system for the bereaved person.

Discuss the psychological, sociological, economic and theological philosophical aspects of the funeral process. How do each of these aspects facilitate the resolution of grief?

Describe what you would include in your own obituary if you were to write it.

Explain what would be your choice of final disposition of your body. Why would you choose this method, and examine the effects this choice might have on your survivors (if any)?

Guided Response: Respond to at least two of your peers.  Use a minimum of one scholarly source found at the University of Arizona Global Campus Library or Google Scholar, to critically examine the procedure that you have selected and its results.  Offer a substantial response to at least two other posts written by members of the class.  Be sure that you cite scientific evidence to support your views. A minimum of 250 -300 words should be used for each response to other posts.  Your response must be formatted according to APA style as outlined by the Writing Center.  Be certain to continue monitoring the discussion board until 5 p.m. (Pacific Time) on Day 7 of the week.

Discuss your understanding of how funerals are impacted by religion, economics and psychological influences and its impact on funeral practices. Conclude how these factors facilitate the resolution of grief, as provided in your classmates’ initial posts. For each response, provide an example from your classmate post, and how it shaped their view of grief and loss.  Support your response with at least one reference from the text or this week’s required articles. You must also comment specifically on one aspect of your classmate’s post with which you can relate or understand their summary of this week’s question, pay particular attention to your own obituary. Be sure to explain in detail your own choice for disposition of your own body after death and why you chose this method. Provide a brief explanation as to why you agree and support your review with research drawn from the required readings this week. What personal and/or professional insights might you gain from your classmates’ posts that could alter your views? In addition to responding to at least two other students’ posts, it is recommended that you reply to at least one classmate who responded to your original post by either respectfully support your conclusions or listing how you might implement the alternatives your classmate suggested.
