Topic: For this essay, you will physically enter a new setting, one that you are not completely comfortable with, and write about your experience as an outsider.
First, think of a group that is different from you in some way, perhaps in religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or socio-economic status. Next, go to a location where you will find this group and interact with people as you begin to feel more comfortable in the setting. For example, you may go to a soup kitchen, a religious service in a mosque, temple, synagogue or church, or a restaurant or bar in China Town, Montrose, or another area of Houston. How did you choose this setting?
What preconceived ideas did you have about the people in this setting?
How did you feel as you entered this new setting?
What did you observe? How did people interact with each other and with you?
What did you learn from this experience?
What advice would you give to someone going through this experience in the future?
Empathy is defined as “the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.” Discuss how leaving your “comfort zone” might help you develop empathy.
