This group is quite diverse in terms of preferred theoretical perspectives and counseling styles. We seem to have a good mix of people interested in a wide range of approaches. That will make it for an interesting course! This week we will start discussing counseling theories and styles more in depth – highlighting the key concepts of each and how they are implemented in a clinical situation (from theory to practice). The first approaches we will focus our attention to are the psychoanalytic and Adlerian approaches, which are foundational for the field of mental health, and have influenced practice for so many decades. You’ve read chapters 4 and 5. Now comment on the following: What are some of the most important contributions of psychoanalytic thinking to the understanding of human nature and psychopathology? What aspects of the theory and practice of psychoanalytic therapy are most criticized? What is your personal “feel” for this theory? In what ways Adlerian therapy is similar to and different from the traditional psychoanalytic approach?
