– What information do you need to consider to understand *how* to read and evaluate each of these selections? Be sure to carefully consider the context (including, for example, when it was written and the purpose of the writing selection) of each selection.

– What explicit or implicit arguments and assumptions is each writing selection making, and which specific parts tell you this?

– How do these selections “read” the conquest differently? What ideas or themes do they most heavily emphasize, and how specifically does the writing show this?

– Although this is by no means a representative selection of material written about the Spanish conquest of American territory, what can you learn by reading these selections together?
