According to the CDC, 2022, almost 1 million people have died in the last 22 years from drug overdoses (CDC 2022). Almost 75 percent of those deaths were a result of opioids. In 2020 there were almost 70,000 people (CDC 2022). Opioids include drugs such as heroin, fentanyl, hydrocodone, oxycodone, and morphine.
There are numerous screening tool that can be used in the healthcare setting. One of those tools includes the Opioid Risk Tool (ORT-OUD). This tool reviewed family history of alcohol and drug abuse including prescription drugs and a personal history of alcohol, drugs and prescription drugs. This tools evaluates any mental health diseases. The patient is scored yes or no. Yes answers have a point value of 1 and no 0 (NIDA, 2021). A score of 2 or lower has a low risk of opioid abuse. However patients with a score of three or greater have a high risk for opioid misuse (NIDA, 2021).
This screening tool should be conducted on initial visit. It should also be completed before starting any opioid medications and periodically while being treated with opioid medications. This may help us determine if opioids are an acceptable treatment method.
