Short proposals are often provided to potential clients after initial meetings and before a contract is created and signed. Proposals ensure that clients and consultants are on the same page from the beginning of a project. They can also help to develop authentic and honest relationships between clients and consultants. Additional language is often added later to create the actual contract.

Grading Requirements

Provide:

• Introduction/Overview of the Issue: What are the larger issues behind the problem? This is often where you’d provide information on the organization’s history and the role the organization plays in the community it serves, as well as, external or internal forces that may be playing a role in the issue.
• Background information: Dive deeper into the problem the clients face and why it might be occurring.
• Objectives of the project: Assuming you understand the root of the issue, if you succeed what will happen?
• The Scope of Work: As a consultant what will you do? What won’t you do? What is the client’s responsibilities? What are yours?
• The Process: What are the steps you think you’ll take to discover the issue in more detail and resolve the issue?
• Timing: How long do you anticipate the consulting process may take? It’s often useful to utilize the process section and break timing down by task.
• Credentials of the consultant (you): What makes you uniquely qualified to serve as a consultant on this project? What knowledge/experiences will you draw from to work with the clients to find a solution? Make sure you include the following:

1. If you will be acting as an internal or external consultant and why.
2. Address if you will be serving as a consulting generalists or specialist and why the role of generalist/specialist is necessary.

There is no specific length requirement for the proposal. However, remember that this is just one section of your Consultant Container that is 2000 – 4000 words in length, so short and concise is best. Please utilize Turabian citations and UCOL format and style guidelines (see homepage for link).
