Instructions: For this assignment, you are required to prepare an Information Sheet about a World Language in danger of disappearing. To do this, you will use the DOBES | Documentation of Endangered Languages (mpi.nl) (Links to an external site.) and Google images/google search.
Steps:
1. Visit the DOBES | Documentation of Endangered Languages (mpi.nl) (Links to an external site.)
2. Familiarize yourself with the site. Read the instructions on how to conduct searches:
a) first choose a country,
b) then the level of endangerment,
c) your results will appear in the Google Maps embedded window, and the list of results/ languages will also be listed on the space on the right side of the map.
d) You can click on the map markers/pins, and/or on the list to choose a specific language to work with.
3. After choosing your language, prepare an Info Sheet about that language. The Info Sheet should be 2 page long maximum, and can be done in word, powerpoint or any other software that you can use to combine text and figures. You can submit any type of file on Canvas. Include the following information in your Info Sheet:
a) Name of the Language, and, if applicable, name of the people/tribe/cultural group who speak this language.
b) Country/location where the language is spoken. Include a small map showing the location.
c) Category of endangerment. Briefly explain what this category means by consulting the UNESCO classification/description.
d) Number of speakers (if available).
e) Cultural aspects of speakers of this language: cultural specificities, such as: rituals, kinship systems, livelihood styles, special food/dishes, connections with surrounding environment/nature, etc. (keep it short, 100-200 words max).
f) Reasons for endangerment and existence of revitalization efforts. For this and for item “e” above, you will have to consult the internet.
g) Image of language speakers (if available), with source.
h) Curiosity: any curious or fun fact, or anecdote about this language (optional).
