most of us have heard the term “woke” used to refer to awareness of social issues. Like most social trends, the term usually evokes an emotional response depending on your stance on certain issues.
PART 1: For your discussion this week I would like you to consider the term “woke.”
- How did the term originate? Do a quick search online or using the library’s databases. Be sure to cite your sources.
- Do you think being woke is a good thing or a bad thing? Can it be both?
- Do you think there is a connection between being woke and the current trend of “cancel culture” that seems to be taking hold on social media and in Hollywood?
Some recent examples of victims of cancel culture are Ellen Degeneres, Jenna Marbles, James Charles, Jeffree Star, Adam Rapoport (editor of Bon Apetit), Thom Brennaman (sportscaster), Kyle Cornell (a radio anchor from Ohio). You may know of more than are listed here.
