On March 28, 1979, the Three Mile Island Unit 2 reactor, which is close to Middletown, Pennsylvania, partly melted down. Despite its minor radioactive discharges having no appreciable consequences on the health of plant employees or the public, this accident was the most dangerous in the history of commercial nuclear power plants operating in the United States. In the wake of it, significant adjustments were made to emergency response preparation, reactor operator training, human factors engineering, radiation protection, and several other nuclear power plant operating areas. Additionally, it led to the NRC reinforcing and stepping up its regulatory monitoring. The safety of American reactors was greatly improved by all these measures. (Backgrounder on the Three Mile Island Accident, n.d.).Following the disaster, the damaged reactor was permanently sealed off and buried in concrete. After removing the radioactive fuel and water, workers finally transferred 15 tons of radioactive waste to an Idaho nuclear waste storage facility. (Three Mile Island, 2009)Among the most important effects of the TMI-2 disaster are training modifications. Training began to focus on safeguarding a plant’s cooling capability regardless of the issue that set it off. The Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO), located in Atlanta, and its National Academy for Nuclear Training were both founded as a result of the TMI-2 catastrophe. These two industry groups have done a good job of endorsing superior nuclear plant operating and accrediting their training programs. ( Three Mile Island Accident, n.d.)The nuclear power sector has become measurably safer and more dependable because of practices in training, operations, and event reporting that evolved from the lessons learned from the TMI-2 catastrophe. By INPO, those tendencies have been both pushed and monitored. A nuclear facility must adhere to the tight guidelines of the US NRC as well as the high requirements established by INPO in order to maintain its excellent status. The Virginia Tech shooting was a school shooting in Blacksburg, Virginia, on April 16, 2007. The shooter, Seung-Hui Cho, left 32 people dead, eventually taking his own life. Cho had a history of mental illness and diagnosed with a mood disorder. The court found him a danger to himself, and counselors at the university noted he was “troubled”, but never expressed homicidal thoughts. On April 16, he started his spree by fatally shooting a student and a resident advisor in a dormitory. Because this was thought to be a domestic homicide and that the shooter was no longer in the area, the university did not take security measures or notify students of a shooter. Later that morning, police stormed the university and found that Cho had already taken his own life after killing 32 people and injuring 17. The following year in 2008, Virginia reached an $11 million settlement with majority of the victims’ families. Two families rejected the offer and instead sued the state and employees at Virginia tech for wrongful death. The case made its way to the Supreme Court, which ruled that Virginia Tech was not negligent. Results of this attack called for improved mental health services and an increase in the debate for stricter gun laws. Several weeks after the shooting, Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine signed an executive order that closed a loophole that allowed mentally ill people to still purchase guns.
