Practice aligning ELP standards with intentional targets and integrated lessons. Remember that Targeted ELD seeks to fill any “gaps” and build background knowledge. Practice and prepare for the integrated lesson. Within the targeted ELD lesson, clear forms and functions should be identified and supported.

Use the Arizona State Standards for your content area. Provide the following:

  1. Grade level – 7th Grade Content/subject- Social Studies
  2. The content standard (write it out and provide the coding for practice – this can be copied directly from the Arizona Department of Education “ADE” resources).
  3. ELD standard (choose from standards 1-10 and copy the standard from the AZ OELAS site)
  4. The form(s) and function(s) to be addressed within the lesson.
  5. A detailed description, or outline, for how you will support the ELD and content standard within a targeted ELD lesson. This should be explicit and detailed, including what realia or other visual supports will be utilized. Another educator should be able to read your description and duplicate the steps and actions taken. Providing examples for what you will say and what students will do and say is encouraged.
  6. An overview for the integrated lesson and how ELs will feel confident and capable within the whole-class lesson.
  7. At least one accommodation/support you will provide for each level (pre-emergent/emergent, basic, intermediate) within the integrated lesson and/or assessments (these are the supports provided for students to show their depth of knowledge and ability without lowering the expectation for mastery).
