Parts 1&2 – Deming Prize and creating a system/model

Part 3 – ISO Certification

Part 1&2 Deming Prize report requires students to synthesize and generalize their analysis and recommendations into a success quality model. You will access to Deming Prize website and learn from organizations who have achieved world-class performance level at https://www.juse.or.jp/deming_en/. From this provided website, you will select only one organization that you’re interested to learn about for your assignment. The details information of each award recipient are located at https://www.juse.or.jp/deming_en/download/

The summary of each company is located under “Reference” (the bottom of the page). Each company’s summary is between 40-60 pages.

Based on the research, recommendations and readings from your selected organization, you’ll complete Parts 1 & 2.

Part1: student will briefly explain the following items of the selected organization, about 1-2 pages summary (single space):

• Company’s name
• Type of industry, products/services
• Level of organizational maturity
• Organizational cultures, business environment (SWOT analysis)
• Methods of continuous improvement used in the case
• Indicators or measures of performance used in the case (financial, customer, internal, learning & growth,…)
• Quality tools and/or management approach used in the case
• Major outstanding points

Part 2: student will create a system or a model of a successful recipient presenting the major contents.

Information from Part 1 and a summary report of the company will help you come up with a new system or a model. Creating a diagram will need your creative thinking and graphical work. See example of systems/models from the file attached with this assignment. In this part, student will create a diagram and also write an explanation about 1 page of your diagram.

Here are the suggested items that you can create a system or a model (select only one):

• Factors influenced on company’s achievement
• Methods/steps/operations of continuous improvement
• Performance measurement and indicators
• Barriers/obstacles in company’s successful operations
• Components of some specific system or operation
• Others

There are many diagrams which you can use in creating a system or a model, for example Fishbone (cause-effect) diagram, SIPOC, flowchart, value stream mapping, affinity. To get a free template, go to www.asq.org, under section “Learn”, select Learn about quality. Or using SmartArt from Word Document, go to Insert on the top menu and select “SmartArt”

Part 3: ISO – International Organization for Standardization

Student will visit the ISO website (https://www.iso.org/about-us.html) and be familiar with the ISO governance structure, vision, and purpose. In addition, student will review ISO popular standards and select one standard to do a research. In Part 3, student will write 1-2 pages (single space, Time NW) covering the following items:

a) ISO General information on structure, vision, purpose, product/service,…

b) think about why you selected this specific standard and provide analytical thoughts on how this specific ISO standard has impact on your interested industry and the future trend. Your analysis may include or relate, but not limit to, technology, sustainability, crisis and pandemic, economy, and…so on.

A summary of major points of ISO popular standard, go to https://www.iso.org/popular-standards.html, then select one standard that you are interested to study (e.g. ISO 9001, 22000, 14001, 13485, 2600, 8601, 31000, 50001, 17025, 27001,…). Student will review ‘the standards’ and summarize the major points with brief description. A standard manual is located on the right column, “Preview our standards”

In your final product, student will complete Parts 1, 2, and 3 above. The report should not be exceeded 6 pages (single space, Time NW) including a diagram/table.
