A mock-up is something that is used by many professionals in the early design stages of a project or product; it is a  helpful way of visualizing your project and thinking through potential design choices in that initial planning stage, such as the colors and fonts you may want to use, and how you might organize your informational visual as a whole. While the guidelines for creating a mockup vary depending on the context and purpose (in the business context, for instance, you’d want to make a pretty detailed mockup of, say, a product you’d like the company to sell, as the goal of the mockup would be to get feedback and persuade your colleagues to approve the product). For the informational visuals we’ll create, I’d like everyone to create a hand-drawn mockup where, at the very minimum, your mockup should be an outline/an outer shell of your informational visual, and at this early stage, the design doesn’t need to be completely set in stone (it’s okay if you later decide to use a different kind of font in the digital version etc); the hand-drawn mockup provides a space to explore your ideas and decide what works or maybe could be adjusted slightly later on.
