Qualitative Data Analysis

Qualitative data analysis is a multifaceted, systematic, rigorous, and time-consuming process that involves identification, examination, and interpretation of common themes and patterns in the data. The researcher reviews data after each interview or focus group and will often revisit data from past interviews to determine and confirm common themes, patterns, and relationships.

Common steps included in qualitative data analysis are:

coding data for common themes or patterns

grouping similar information together in categories or groups

relating different themes or categories to one another

To review the textual data, the researcher seeks to find answers to the following questions:

What common themes or patterns emerge from reviewing the data?

What atypical responses are present?

Do any of the common themes or patterns need additional data?

How to the common themes or patterns relate to each other?

Look for:

Data collection where the problem occurs with the people experiencing the problem.

The researcher is the key to data collection by observing and or interviewing participants.

Multiple data sources: interviews, documentation and/or observations.

Inductive data analysis that builds categories, patterns and themes from the collected data.

The process revolves around the participant’s view and the meaning to them regarding the problem.

The research design evolves as the data is collected. It is not pre-planned.

Social and cultural theories are used to create perspective on the data.

Qualitative data is used to provide a three-dimensional description of the problem.
