Instructions for Writing Your Pathology Paper:

Your papers will allow you the opportunity to explore a pathology or disease of your choice in further detail, and to explain the current state of the field in terms of treatments and prognosis. You may select any disease you like, as long as you relate it to one of the systems covered in the class during the current semester (see schedule for list of systems).

Papers should be:

· APA Format

· 12” font (Times New Roman or Calibri only), with 1” margins on all sides.

· 5-7 pages, double-spaced, not including references or figures/pictures.

· Uploaded into the corresponding assignment in Canvas by midnight of the due date.

You may upload a draft of your paper into the corresponding assignment by no later than midnight, 48 hours prior to the due date of the final paper. A plagiarism program will review your drafts and/or you final paper submission. I will give feedback on your draft, as necessary, in Canvas.

Late submissions will be accepted, but at a reduced point value (generally 10% reduced per day that it is late). However, better late than never!

All facts and ideas that are not directly your own must be cited once in the text itself (**see below**), and again in the references page (**see below**). When in doubt, cite it out…

Acceptable academic reference sources include: pubmed.gov (cite specific articles), university or college websites, institution websites (such as NIH), and textbooks. You must use a minimum of five references, and at least three must be of an academic nature. References should be recent (within the past 1-2 years if possible). Peer-reviewed references are preferred.

Your papers should include the following sections, clearly labeled with sub-headings in bolded text and distinct from the other sections:

I) Introduction (Tell me why you selected this disease: You may use first person language in this section only. If you pick a pathology or disease that personally has affected you or a family member or close friend, Do NOT use specific names – i.e. do NOT say “my mother” or “my brother” has this disease, but rather “a relative” has this disease.)

II) Background of the disease (Main characteristics, clinical presentation, historical context, etc…)

III) Current therapies & prognosis of patients (What treatments are currently used for patients? What type of outlook does a patient have for the next five or ten years? What are some treatments currently in development?)

IV) Conclusions and discussion (Summarize the main points without copying them directly. Offer any interpretation of data or research findings you discussed, that might help in the prevention, treatment, or curing of this disease.)
