Assignment Questions

1. Summarize the Spanish Flu Pandemic. (Response should be between 300 to 400 words)

Include key dates, vectors of disease, rates of disease transmission/infection, and any other relevant information. Use this summary as an overview that will connect to your responses in questions 3 through 5. Be sure to include at least two peer-reviewed references.

2. Summarize the COVID-19 Pandemic. (Response should be between 300 to 400 words)

Include key dates, vectors of disease, rates of disease transmission/infection, and any other relevant information. Use this summary as an overview that will connect to your responses in questions 3 through 5. Be sure to include at least two peer-reviewed references.

3. One Health and the Chosen Pandemics. (Response should be between 450 to 800 words)

Utilizing what you understand about each pandemic, as well as what has been covered in the course, explain the relevance of the One Health One Medicine concept to each. Include a minimum of four specific examples (two per each pandemic for a total of four all together) of the ways in which One Health One Medicine concepts impacted aspects of each pandemic. Chosen examples can cover either positive or negative disease outcomes throughout the course of each pandemic, so long as they are specific and well backed by peer-reviewed references. Be sure to include at least two peer-reviewed references.

4. Social and Political Considerations of Disease. (Response should be between 575 to 800 words)

Consider where each disease was first identified. Compare the social and political contexts in these regions. How are these contexts similar? How are they different? Expand on any major events, occurrences, or social factors that you believe contributed/facilitated the spread of each disease. Be sure to explain how the events, occurrence, or social factors you have identified specifically impacted disease spread. Be sure to include at least two peer-reviewed references.

5. Disease Mitigation, Treatment, and Controls. (Response should be between 575 to 800 words)

Consider how each of the pandemics impacted their respective population. Using what you have learned in the course and your knowledge of emerging and reemerging infectious diseases, identify and critique four disease mitigation or treatment strategies implemented to control each disease (two strategies per disease for a total of four strategies all together). Explain why strategies were infective and how they could have been improved. Identify one strategy you believe would have been effective to control the spread of both diseases. Be sure to include at least two peer-reviewed references.
