Self-Esteem and Self-Efficacy.html

Self-Esteem and Self-Efficacy

George Bailey (played by James Stewart in the movie It's a Wonderful Life) was the chief executive officer of an inherited loan company (Bailey Saving and Loan) that operated during the Great Depression. The financial company provided loans to people to build and buy homes. George grew up helping others. He was well liked and respected in the community. It could be said that he proved to be a leader in the community. However, throughout the movie, George questioned his abilities, especially when he watched his brother becoming a war hero after going to college and his best friend becoming a rich plastics manufacturer. James Stewart captured the emotions of a man going through life with intensity and a sense of low self-esteem—a man who, at times, did not believe he could make ends meet and run the company.

Self-esteem is "a person's overall self-evaluation or sense of self-worth" (Myers, 2008). According to Wojciszke and Struzynska-Kujalowicz (2007), power and self-esteem go together. Strong and effective leadership is positively correlated with not only high self-esteem but also an internal locus of control. In the case of George Bailey, there were other factors that seemed to interfere with his self-esteem and self-efficacy. Let’s discuss the factors that shaped George's behavior.

Perceived Self-Control.html

Perceived Self-Control

If you analyze George Bailey’s life, you might observe that much of his life was not in his control. Each time he planned something for himself, such as going to college, travelling, or becoming an engineer, his plans were obstructed by events that were out of his control. For instance, when his father passed away, George was forced to take over the management of the company to save it from being sold to Mr. Potter. Similarly, toward the end of the movie, George's uncle Bill Bailey, an absentminded cofounder of the company, lost the deposit money of $8,000 at the time the company was under audit. This crisis situation forced George to approach the villain of the movie, Mr. Potter, for help, but Mr. Potter rebuked George, sending him into a self-destructive tailspin.

The question that arises then is, did the events that happened to George throughout his life constitute an internal or external locus of control? The answer to this question probably is that George’s life having many challenges and unexpected turns did not necessarily mean he had an external locus of control. Myers (2008) defined a locus of control as "the extent to which people perceive outcomes as internally controlled by their own efforts and actions or externally controlled by chance or outside forces."

At the end of the movie, George's guardian angel made George understand what would have happened had George not existed. George realized his life had a significant impact on the lives of others. His acceptance of being unable to control the unfolding events because of several external factors leads us to the conclusion that he had an external locus of control.
