The persuasive speech is designed to be a problem solving speech. You find a
significant problem in the country/world, and you tell us how to solve it.
Once you post your topic choices and get one approved in the discussion board
this week, you’ll need to put together a draft.
As you know there are 3 parts in a speech: intro, body, conclusion
Intro has an attention getter, thesis, and preview of the main points
Conclusion has a review of the main points, restate thesis, and closing
statements
Body has 3 main points. Main points have a topic sentence and 3 subpoints.
The main points for the speech are:
MP1: Problem
MP2: Cause
MP3: Solution
To make sure you put the information in the right MP, ask yourself these
questions
MP1: Problem (negative effects)- Who or what is being harmed and in what way?
The most common types of harm are physical, psychological, and financial
MP2: Cause- Why will the problem continue, why the did the problem get out of
hand, or, why will the problem get worse
The most common causes are individual ignorance, society
ignorance/misconceptions, laws allowing bad things to happen, lack of
laws, or corruption.
MP3: Solution- How can we address the causes
Feasible plans or ideas to address the situation
problem is happening, but then give us solutions, to address the causes, which
will reduce or eliminate the problem.

For example:
If my topic was human trafficking I’d break it down like this:
MP1-Problem (negative effects)- Who or what is being harmed and in what way?
Obviously people are being harmed.
SP1- Physically assaulted
SP2- Emotionally scarred
SP3- Some even end up being killed
MP2-Cause- Why will the problem continue, why the did the problem get out of
hand, or, why will the problem get worse
SP1- Ignorance-people don’t know how to spot a trafficking victim, and
victims might not know how to get out
SP2- Corruption in other countries and potentially ours
SP3- Lack of resources to track down traffickers and organizations
MP3-Solution
SP1- Learn the signs of trafficking, and work with charities and
organizations
SP2- Pass more legislation and apply legislation better
SP3- Fund more programs to seek and eliminate trafficking

A metaphor for this is:
You wake up one morning with a hurt leg. You’re in pain (physical harm), you
can’t get to work (financial harm) and now you’re stressed about bills
(psychological harm).
Sounds like a problem, right?
Then you go to the doctor. The doctor tells you what’s causing the pain. A
broken leg.
So what does the doctor do as a solution? Resets the leg and places it in a cast.
This will solve the broken leg, and eliminate the problems/harms.

We will be writing these speeches word for word. Persuasion is a complex
process requiring organization, stats/research, and precise word choices that
vague outlines wont provide. The recommended word count is 960-1350 words.
Remember that the outlining words (Attention getter, Thesis, etc.) add up to 75
words that need to be taken into account when looking at the final word count on
your document.
You will NOT be reading the speeches. You should be at 50% memorization for
the speech. This means practicing at least 15 times.
Make sure to time yourself when practicing. The word count is a guide but the
only way to guarantee, is to practice.

ORAL CITATIONS
Sources will be cited orally, meaning out loud in the speech. They belong in the
support section of each subpoint.
Oral citations only need 3 parts: where/when/what.
Where was this information published (CNN, Huffington Post, PBS, NPR etc.)
When was this information published (date of publication)
What did they say (you may paraphrase or quote)
For example:
PBS September 17, 2015 reports
NPR March 7, 2012 explains
Notice I don’t say “in an article from PBS.” Why? Because we know it’s an article
already. It wastes words.
What you don’t need to put in an oral citation:
“In an article”
The article title
The author

Again only where, when, and what
