Instructions:

Write a proposal for your TED Talk, explaining your ideas and rhetorical choices to an unfamiliar audience. Feel free to write your proposal as a series of short answers in a numbered list, as in the example below. Use this assignment as an opportunity to organize and formalize your thinking, as well as streamline your final preparation efforts. If you wish, we can discuss your proposal in office hours or during the optional Week 10 conferences.

Example (Based on Brian Sokol’s “Humanizing the Refugee Crisis”):

My on-scene experience as a photojournalist in a Sudanese Refugee camp.

2) Context 

The ongoing displacement of large populations due to war and environmental crisis.

3) They Say 

The Western Narrative of refugees, as constructed by various well-intentioned organizations (like the U.N. and global publications).

4) Gap / Research Question (what you think are not mentioned in they said)

This Western Narrative promotes statistics and stereotypes that fail to create change. What happens if we de-emphasize these group-based tales of pity and woe?

5) I Say (your own opinions that differ with what they said)

To make more headway, we need to humanize the refugee crisis by telling more individual stories.

6) Anticipation(s) of Objection / Counterargument

Some might argue that the Western Narrative has its meritsand I would agree. Certainly, those images have the ability to shock people, and sometimes that is what is needed to create awareness. Data, too, has its place in helping to combat social issues. But we also need people to challenge their preconceived notions about people affected by hardships, and the Western Narrative often fails to achieve that goal. Don’t get me wrong, here: I’m not suggesting we abolish the data and images documenting this crisis. Rather, I want us to add more individualized stories to help humanize the Western Narrative.
