Essay 2 Topics Tip: Keep in mind that the following are also options for the Essay 2 assignment. However, since you cannot use the same topic for your Module Response AND the Essay 2, if you choose to write about the story in this module for the Essay 2 assignment, you might pick your second favorite of the following prompts for your module response so that you can save your favorite for the essay.
Keep in mind that you do not necessarily need to answer/respond to every question in a given prompt. Look for the central issue. The key to your response is to have your own thesis–the point you want to make.
Choose ONE of the following topics/prompts:
- What is Maggies symbolic role in the story? Maggie, the mute kitchen woman, is central to Twyla and Robertas memories of St. Bonnys and to their relationship to one another. Each makes a different assumption about Maggies race. Why are they both unable to remember Maggies race clearly? When Twyla tries to come to grips with her fraught memories of Maggie, why does she conclude Maggie was my dancing mother? Why might Maggie have represented a kind of failed motherhood to both women? What else might Maggie represent?
- At what point in the story do you first begin to make assumptions about the race and class of the two main characters, Twyla and Roberta? Why? Do you change your mind later in the story? When and why soor not? How do the historical, cultural, and/or social events of the story affect your assumptions?
- What is the significance of Morrisons choice both to withhold information about the characters race and to have Twyla narrate the story? How would the story be different if she had chosen to have Roberta narrate the story?
- How does the relationship between Twyla and Roberta evolve over the course of the story? What outside forces (cultural, social, economic, etc.) affect their relationship? Is the evolution of their friendship typical of the relationship between two womenregardless of raceor are there unique aspects to the way Twyla and Roberta go through childhood and adulthood (together and apart) that can be seen in their personal bond?
- The short story is narrated in the 1980s, but also set in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. How does each decade exert unique pressures on the interracial relationship between Twyla and Roberta? If the short story was continued into this centuryto 2021what cultural signposts might Morrison refer to?
