Juvenile Justice Work

Over the course of this class, we have been able to see that children come in many, shapes, sizes, colors, and conditions. As we continue to change, the needs of our system continue to change. I also think in this day and age of media, research, and tight budgets, there is always struggle to meet families needs yet do no harm to others. This assignment is to give you some time and space to explore some of the confounding reports around our Juvenile Justice System locally.

 The Children’s Defense Fund presents that we have some staggering statistic and possible correlations.  We see a large rate of children not engaged in early education, low scores in school, and a high rate of incarceration.  

Take some time to investigate and share the rates in Washington for incarcerated youth, what services are being offered to youth? What intervention programs are we offering? As a potential employee in the field talk about how this information may impact your work? How did you work with children? What this information may inform you to do differently? Did you know the current JJ of Seattle is under construction? Are they building another jail? Does it include services? Is there going to be more or fewer beds? What are they planning for? What do you think about the amount of money being invested in jail VS the amount of money being invested in that same student’s education?

This should be no more than 4 pages assignment. This is a space to do some research online, use credible sites (meaning government, non-profit organizations, research-based articles) for information, answer the questions above, and show your critical thinking and reflective statements about what you learned. Make sure to list your resources and information. This will be worth 10 points.
