Topic: Applying Theory to the Real World
Purpose: Theories of crime are a major part of the criminological discipline, but they are really only useful to us when they can be applied to the real world! Applying theories to real-world examples allows us to better understand the mechanisms of the theory AND better understand the motivation/choices of individuals who engage in crime.
This assignment asks you to reflect on how major theories of crime can account for the delinquency of real kids in the context of Nikki Jones’ (2010) ethnography Between Good & Ghetto: African-American Girls and Inner-City Violence. Jones’ book highlights the experiences of young several girls in inner-city Philadelphia who are both exposed to physical violence and sometimes engage in violence themselves.
Assignment: Discuss the fighting/violent behavior any/all of the girls discussed in Chapter 1 of Nikki Jones’ (2010) ethnography Between Good & Ghetto: African-American Girls and Inner-City Violence and link their experience to ONE of the following theories:
- Agnew’s General Strain Theory
- Akers’ Social Learning Theory
- Hirschi’s Social Bond Theory

1. READ Chapter 1, “The Social World of Inner-City Girls” in Jones, N. (2010). Between Good and Ghetto: African-American Girls and Inner-City Violence. New Brunswick, NJ: Rutgers University Press. This chapter is posted in both Week 5 & Week 6 on the course Blackboard site.

· How does your chosen theory account for criminal behavior, in general? (Note: this will be just an overview, but be sure to discuss ALL major components of the theoretical mechanism!)
· How would your chosen theory account for the specific causes of offending discussed in the chapter, i.e., why the girls FIGHT? (Be sure to describe these connections in detail, using evidence/examples/quotes from the reading and, again, discussing ALL major components of the mechanism.)
· What are the implications of these connections? (For example: What does this
application of theory to real-life suggest about causes of delinquency/crime in general? How might we prevent it?)
3. Write a paper (~4-5 pages) summarizing/discussing your responses to the above bullet point questions.
