HISTORICAL CONTEXT: A major theme of the first part of this course has been how historical context influenced the balancing that the Constitutions framers sought, and the compromises they made, in developing a new framework for governance. More specifically, they were strongly influenced by split attitudes about the young countrys experiences under the Articles of Confederation, which the Constitutional Convention of 1787 was originally meant to reform. While in Philadelphia, delegates soon split in favor of reform versus replacement. But they still had substantial disagreements. How they worked these out reverberates through American political life and governance today.
