AMERICAN GOVERNMENT

its 2 Question and each Question is a page and a half

Midterm Exam
POLS 1101
Savannah State University

Your exam will consist of both of the following essay questions. Prepare essays to answer the questions below and submit those essays to the dropbox labeled Midterm Exam. You should draw upon your notes (and lecture videos) and the readings (textbook and articles in the syllabus) when writing your essays. You dont have to formally quote and cite on essay exams if you dont use anyone elses words, but you do need to demonstrate knowledge of the material. HINT: please dont write a single paragraph or just a half page to answer the questions. Each of these questions is complex and needs some attention. If you write too little, you are telling me you dont know the material. You can submit them to the Dropbox as one document or as two separate documents. MAKE SURE YOU SUBMIT TWO ESSAYS. Also, you cannot plagiarize. If you plagiarize, you will receive a zero for the exam. Plagiarism includes patch-writing, which is when a person copies and pastes material that is not theirs, and then changes words here and there to make it look original. Turnitin.com will catch this, and it is plagiarism. If you have questions about plagiarism, please ask me. You may also turn in your essays multiple times to the dropbox to check the Turnitin.com report. I will only grade the last file you submit. The exam is due on March 9, at 11:59pm.

1. In Federalist 10, Madison makes the case for the large republic. What is his case for the large republic, and what are potential objections from his political enemies (people who support small republics, i.e. states rights)? How does Madisons case for the large republic relate to his case for the separation of powers in Federalist 51? The two papers have a common core: what is that core? Please explain your answer.

2. We have spent a considerable amount of time discussing religious freedom in the First Amendment in class. If you were to sit down with a member of your family who knows nothing about the U.S. Constitution, how would you explain the meaning of the Establishment Clause and the Free Exercise Clause and the differences between the two clauses? What sorts of examples would you use to help elucidate your explanation? What cases would your family member likely be familiar with (that we discussed in class)? Give the explanation that you would give to your family member to help them understand the First Amendment Religion clauses.
