1. Sample Calculation: Show your oxygen change rate calculation for the Sun-Adapted data run. You must show all your work for full credit.

2.  Sample Calculation: Show your carbon dioxide change rate calculation for the Shade-Adapted data run. You must show all your work for full credit.

3. Examine your results. Do your results reveal a possible relationship between the rates of oxygen and carbon dioxide production? What is that relationship? Explain, using your results as part of your explanation.

4. Using your results for change in oxygen concentration as a reference, discuss whether your results from Procedure I confirm the research findings cited on the Background Tab about differences in the amount of chlorophyll produced in sun-adapted versus shade-adapted leaves.

5. Would you expect respiration to occur when the illumination is 100%?  Explain why or why not.

6. Explain what is meant by the “net” photosynthesis rate. Note: A full explanation is expected here, not a calculation or a one-sentence definition.

Procedure II – Respiration Rates – 0% Illumination Data Run

8. Sample Calculation: Show your carbon dioxide change rate calculation for the Shade-Adapted data run. You must show all your work for full credit.

9. Cite here the respiratory rates for your sun-adapted versus shade-adapted leaves at 0% illumination. Observing your data, which type of leaf (sun or shade) had the greater change in carbon dioxide concentration? Can you explain why this might be so? Use the biological principles you learned in this lab to try to explain these results.

Procedure III – Low-Light Net Photosynthesis Rates – 15% Illumination

Complete the tables below using your data and information found under the Background tab.  Also see the Summary of Needed Formulas section.

10. Sample Calculation: Show your oxygen change rate calculation for the Sun-Adapted data run. You must show all your work for full credit.

11. Now let’s compare the photosynthetic efficiency of the two different types of leaves: sun-adapted and shade-adapted. Based on the data you collected in Procedure I (100% illumination) and Procedure III (15% illumination), can you see any pattern in how efficiently sun-adapted versus shade-adapted leaves produced oxygen? Is either of these systems (sun-adapted versus shade-adapted) the best producer of oxygen at all levels of illumination? Cite your actual results as you describe what you observed and offer an explanation.

12. Are your results for Procedure III (15% illumination) consistent with research findings cited on the Background Tab regarding chlorophyll production in shade-adapted versus sun-adapted leaves? Cite these findings and use your own data to support your conclusion.
