In this passage, we find the story of Mary and Martha, the sisters of Lazarus. As many preparations had to be made for Jesus and the disciples, Mary “sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what He said” while Martha was fatigued by making “all of the preparations.” It has been said that the problem with Martha was not her serving, but rather that she is worried and distracted. The Greek word periespato, translated “distracted” has the implication of being pulled or dragged in different directions. Have you ever felt like that while serving in a ministry situation? Martha certainly did.
In a similar manner, the signs of compassion fatigue include physical and mental fatigue, feelings of powerlessness, and frequent complaining about work or life. Compassion fatigue has been described as the cost of caring; and if we are not careful, overcommitting, over functioning, and over caring in ministry can contribute to compassion fatigue.
