First and noblest of human contracts, marriage was divinely instituted in the Garden of Eden, when the Lord God, seeing that it was not good for man to be alone, made a help suitable for him, and established the rite of marriage, while heavenly hosts witnessed the wonderful scene.

Marriage was sanctioned and honored by the presence and power of Jesus Christ at the wedding in Cana of Galilee, and it was this glad occasion marked the beginning of His wondrous works. This happy story assures us that the blessing of God is upon that marriage where God’s Son is present and in control.

This rite is declared by the apostle Paul to be honorable among all men. He reveals marriage to be a sacred type of the spiritual union of Christ the Saviour with those who, through repentance and faith, submit themselves to Him and receive His eternal salvation. Paul says: “Wives submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord,” and “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church and gave himself for it.”

Christ, the Divine Son of God, took upon Himself a human body, and lived a sinless life as the Son of Man. Then, upon that great day in God’s plan for the saving of mankind, Christ died on the cross as a substitute for our sins. When we repent of our sins and receive Him into our hearts by faith, He becomes our Saviour, and we enjoy with Him a blessed and eternal relationship, of which marriage is a sacred symbol.

Originated in divine wisdom and goodness, and designated to promote human happiness and holiness, this rite is the foundation of home life and social order, and must so remain till the end of time.
