From Week 1 you have been building a reading log of pertinent resources in this important field of mission care. This week you will continue the log with Week 4 resources.

 

Read the following literature:

(Hay) Chapter 11 “Spiritual Life” p. 131-139 by Jaap Ketelaar and Rachel Murray

(Hay) Chapter 12 “Spiritual Life: Spiritual Warfare” p. 141-148 by Japp Ketelaar and Alan McMahon

Study the “Practical Tips for a Vital Spiritual Life” in Powell, p. 88-89.

(Powell) “Missionary Stressors and Implications for Care” by Joan Carter, 101-105

(Powell) “Stress and Coping: Learning How to Be Resilient” by Jan Yeaman, 107-117

(Powell) “Maintaining Spiritual Vitality: Spiritual Resources for Tough Times” by Lareau Lindquist, p. 88-89

Week 4 — Correlation of Language Learning and Spiritual Formation

Week 4 — Theology of Culture:

 

1. Christianity is a culturally static religion and other cultures are to enter the culture of the mission worker.

 

2. God created cultures.

 

3. Christ is never a foreigner in another culture.

 

4. Cultures as part of creation are blessed and all parts of a culture are scriptural/sancti-

 

fied.

 

5. Incarnational ministry means we literally become Christ in ministry.

Week 4 — First Home Assignment:

 

1. The First Home Assignment should be scheduled after 2 years on the field.

 

2. If the cycles of Culture Shock are interrupted, they may be repeated.

 

3. Longer home assignments are better for the workers’ ministry.

 

4. A shift in identity is created in the worker by the cultural adjustment process.

 

5. During the first home assignment workers anticipate a season of high stress.

 

6. The Care Provider’s role is to help set expectations for the first home assignment.
