Watch the movie 1964 and read the chapter on Civil Rights.
Explain the goals of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and the Civil Rights Act of 1968. Have these goals been realized? Why or why not? It is important to look at the state of voting rights today in the aftermath of the Supreme Court decision, Shelby County v. Holder . Certain current state policies have limited voting rights. Can you think of any examples?
Be specific and give examples. Use the movie as one of your sources.
1.The Civil Rights Act of 1964, which ended segregation, the goal was to stop discrimination on basis of a person’s race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. Before being passed, the Jim Crow Law was in effect which was a law that allowed racial segregation to go on. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 a legislation that prohibits racial discrimination in voting. Before the Legislation was passed they would use literacy tests and poll taxes to deny African Americans the right to vote. The civil rights act of 1968 was a law passed in 1968 that prohibits discrimination in housing sales or rental properties. President Lyndon Johnson was the President of the United States while all of these bills were passed. also, President Lyndon Johnson passed these bills following the riots after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The goal has been received but it has not been realized. The goal has not been understood because after the bills were passed there has still been history repeating itself.
The Supreme Court found that part of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was unconstitutional in the case of Shelby County v. Holder. It is important to still look after the voting right even after the Shelby County v. Holder case because history will repeat itself. After all, we have seen it over the years. For example, as if today, there are at least 18 states that enacted 30 laws that will make it even harder for Americans to vote. These laws include making early voting and mail voting more difficult, harsher voter ID requirements, and many more. This is just going show to why it is important to look at voting rights.
2.Prohibition of segregation, cease discrimination, prohibition of racial discrimination in voting and real estate, and overall racial equality were all initial goals of the Civil Rights Era. More specifically, the goal of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibited segregation and cease discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. The Civil Rights act of 1968 prohibits any discrimination in real estate, specifically in the sale of houses for the sale of rental properties. The voting rights act of 1965 is a legislation responsible for letting all minorities regardless of race, gender, sexuality, religion, and disability all have equal voting rights and eliminating all voting discrimination. Each and every single one of these goals has been realized within the legal ssystem, but loop holes are always discovered and racial injustice is still ever-present within our nation. Yes, it was monumental for each of these legislations to come to fruition, yet we are not there yet; there is still injustice that needs to be checked and aligned en route of equality. We have seen states in America implement gerrymandering and have been forced to watch Shelby v. Halder unfold before our eyes. We still see discrimination in real estate through the refusal of approving certain applicants and plenty of other obvious racial discrimination practices.
A perfect example of current American voting limitations is our own state. Georgia has implemented restrictive limitations on the number of people who can vote.
