Civil Defense and Emergency Management Strategies in Your Community
In the readings for this unit, we learned about the history of civil defense and the ways this has changed over time in our communities to include emergency management. For this assignment, discuss two ways your local community has implemented civil defense/emergency management strategies that include the community (as opposed to only policies or procedures for emergency management personnel). These can include strategies such as preparedness campaigns, Community Engagement Response Team (CERT) programs, citizen fire/police academies, or any other types of programs that actually involve the community. Explain how your community addresses the core missions and goals of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security as described on pages 30–32 of your textbook. Be sure to identify your community in your document.
Be sure to summarize, paraphrase, and cite the information. Do not copy directly from the textbook or from any other source, including your community website. Sites such as Wikipedia, ehow.com, history.com, howstuffworks.com, and other similar sources are not scholarly in nature and may NOT be used for this assignment.
Your paper needs to be at least two full pages in length not counting the title and reference pages. You must include at least two sources in your assignment (one can be the course textbook). The paper must follow APA Style in format, include a title/cover page, in-text citations, and a properly formatted reference page. You do not need to include an abstract for this assignment. Should you choose to include one, the abstract does not count toward the two-page minimum length requirement. If you are unsure about APA requirements, please be sure to review the formatting information provided for you in the classroom, student portal, and Writing Center.

Emergency Management, Civil Defense, and Your Community
In a two-page paper, discuss possible targets for domestic terrorism in your community. These can be structures, facilities, or events that take place in the community. Apply concepts covered in our textbook. Your final paper (due in Unit VII) will build on the information you prepare for this assignment. Explain how non-weapons technology could be used for destructive means in your community. Discuss the philosophical differences between religious, nationalist, and left/right wing terrorist organizations in your community.
Please do not say there is no potential threat in your community because you live in a small or rural community. Remember, no one thinks something will happen in their community until it actually does. It can happen anywhere, so think carefully about the potential targets in your community.

Completion of FEMA Course Plus Reflection Paper
This assignment involves completion of a course offered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). For this assignment, you will submit both a completion certificate of the training and a reflection paper.
The purpose of this course is to introduce those with critical infrastructure security and resilience duties and responsibilities to the information and resources available to them in the execution of the mission to protect and improve resilience in the nation’s critical infrastructure. According to FEMA, the training takes approximately 1 hour to complete.
Click on the following link, and when the web page opens, click “Interactive Web Based Course” to begin the course. A screen capture of the FEMA Training Screen that highlights the link in red if you have difficulty locating it is provided.

Also, how might the concepts of non-proliferation and counter proliferation play a role in critical infrastructure security and resilience? Even though the reflection essay is a short assignment, you do still need to include a title page with your name on it.
When you are ready to submit this assignment, remember to include both documents: the completion certificate for the training module and the 150-word essay. To submit two documents, click on the name of the assignment in Blackboard. Click “Browse My Computer,” and attach the first file.
