After reading this week’s required readings in Graphic Design Basics and Adobe Illustrator, download the WGD201_W4_iLab_Resources.zip (Links to an external site.) file and extract the files to a location on your computer. Select ONE of the graphics from the Resources folder to use for this assignment.

After selecting the vector graphic, complete the steps below.
Artboard Size
One artboard at 6″ X 6″ inches

Adobe Illustrator CC
This software is part of Adobe Creative Cloud.Please use a personal copy or the complimentary Adobe Creative Cloud subscription provided by DeVry.

Lab Steps
STEP 1: Creating the Illustrator File
1.1 Open Illustrator and go to File > New
1.2 Choose “Print” as the medium
1.3 Enter the values below:
Name: lastname_week4lab (where your name is substituted for “lastname”)
Units: Inches
Width and Height: 6 inches
1.4 In the “Advanced Features”:
Color Mode: CMYK Color
Raster Effects: High (300ppi)
1.5 Click Create
1.6 At this point, your document is in memory, but not yet saved. It is good practice to save your file to the location where you want it before continuing. To do this:
Go to File > Save As
When the file save dialog pops up, browse to the folder where you want to save your file
Make sure that the file type is “Adobe Illustrator (.ai)”
Click Save
1.7 Now you are ready to start your artwork!
STEP 2: Placing the Vector Image in Illustrator
2.1 Select one of the following six graphics that you would like to use.
2.2 Save this graphic to your desktop.
2.3 Select File > Place, to import your graphic into Illustrator.
2.4 Locate your graphic on your desktop and left click it to select it.
2.5 Left click the Place button.
2.6 Once your image is in Illustrator, use the Selection tool (the black arrow on the upper left hand side of the tool bar) to resize the image to fit the dimensions of the Artboard.
2.7 When you are happy with how your image looks, lock the layer, and create a new layer.

STEP 3: Recreating the Vector Image
3.1 Make sure that you are on the new layer you created.
3.2 Using the Pen tool, trace over your graphic. You will select the color fills you would like to use. Spend as much time as you need and then move on to the next step.
3.3 After you have recreated your graphic and have filled the graphic with color, lock your current layer.
3.4 Save your AI file
STEP 4: Creating the Background
4.1 Create a new layer and move this new layer below the layer on which you recreated the graphic.
4.2 Using the Pen tool, create a background for your animal. This background can include the Shape tools. This background can be a landscape or an abstract. However, it cannot just be a solid background color. Spend as much time as you need and then move on to the next step.
STEP 5: Saving and Exporting your Artwork
videoicon5.1 Make sure you Save often; File > Save.
5.2 When you have completed this assignment, turn off the Eye icon by left clicking on the original layer (this is where you placed the graphic you found).
5.3 Save your .ai file once again
5.6 Now you’re going to make a JPEG version of your artwork. To do this, go to File > Export > Find Save As type, and select JPEG.
5.7 Check mark Use Artboards.
5.8 Click Export.
5.9 In the folder where you saved your work, your should now see both your .ai file and your .jpg file.

STEP 6: Submit
6.1 Compress the Ai and JPEG files into a single .zip file. For assistance in zipping and unzipping files, review the How to Compress Files and Save As .Zip document (Links to an external site.).
6.2 Submit the .zip file.
