Step 1: For your midterm essay, you practiced using

Step 1: For your midterm essay, you practiced using the traditional five-paragraph essay structure. The five-paragraph structure is convenient and adaptable for longer essay, but it’s not the only way to organize your ideas in writing. Explore these other organizational strategies:

organization of an APA research paper: OrganizationofanAcademicPaper.pdf
organization of proposals (also called problem-solving writing), pp. 252-253 of The Norton Field Guide
two ways of organizing arguments, p. 179 of The Norton Field Guide
Monroe’s Motived Sequence: https://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/MonroeMotivatedSequence.htm
Step 2: After studying the material above, choose one of the following texts from The Norton Field Guide to read carefully. Think about the organization of the text as you read. I encourage you write a reverse outline by jotting down a few key words to summarize the main point in each paragraph.

An Ancient Remedy Reexamined by Jason Hasler, pp. 757-762
“An Outbreak of the Irrational” by Sarah Dzubay, pp. 808-813
The Politics of Stairs by Joanna S. Keller, pp. 953-958
Step 3: Discuss the organization of the text you selected. None of these texts are five-paragraph essays, but you might recognize some similarities. Discuss the following questions as you analyze the organization of the text:

Does the text have an introduction that gets the reader’s attention?
Does it have a thesis statement?
Does the author use topic sentences or transitions?
How does the essay differ from a five-paragraph essay?
Does the author use any of the organizational strategies you read about in Step 1?
Do you think the organization is effective? Why or why not?
Be specific and give examples to illustrate your claims. Put quotation marks around any words you quote directly.

Entry 2

The rough draft of your final essay is due next Wednesday. Read the assignment instructions. What are you going to write about? Describe the problem and solution you’ve come up with. How will you organize your research essay or letter? (Refer to the organizational strategies you explored in Entry 2.) Include a brief outline using key words to summarize the main points of your paragraphs.

Entry 3

A research paper is investigative and documented. A research log is a method authors use to keep track of their investigation and documentation. You might find this template useful: research-log-template.docx

For this journal entry, tell me about one source you have found during your investigation.

You can download the template, complete it, and then attach the file.
Or you can type the APA reference in your journal, skip a line, and then describe the usefulness of the source. Use a combination of paraphrases and short direct quotes (with citations), and explain how you can use the information in your essay.
Here is an example of a complete research log: 1101-sample-research-log.pdf
